BOISE, Idaho— Boise State men’s basketball will travel to Costa Rica for a foreign tour Aug. 11-16, in preparation for the 2016-17 season. The trip will include international competition, cultural experiences and various team-building activities.
“There is so much value in a foreign tour,” said head coach Leon Rice. “This will be a great way for all of our new players and staff to get acclimated to each other. That’s truly the benefit of a foreign trip. Also, the 10 extra days of practice will be great for such a new team.”
Boise State enters the 2016-17 campaign with one returning starter, five newcomers, three student-athletes who redshirted last season and two new assistant coaches. The Broncos graduated four members of last year’s team (Montigo Alford, Anthony Drmic, Lonnie Jackson and Mikey Thompson) and had one early entrant to the NBA Draft (James Webb III). Those five accounted for 61.5 percent of the minutes played last season and 65.1 percent of the team's scoring.
The Broncos will play games against teams from Costa Rica and Canada from Aug. 12-14. The trip will be based in Costa Rica’s capital city of San Jose, which will be the site of all games. The team will spend its downtime diving into the culture and history of the Central American country. The final destination will be the coastal town of Playa Herradura.
NCAA rules allow teams to take a foreign tour once every four years. Teams participating in a foreign trip are also permitted 10 practice dates in advance of the trip. Boise State is expected to begin practicing in late July.
The last time Boise State embarked on a foreign tour was in 2007 on a Labor Day weekend trip to Canada. That trip kick started the 2007-08 season which culminated in a WAC Tournament title and trip to the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
"We strive to provide our students-athletes with opportunities that impact their lives beyond the court or field," said Director of Athletics Curt Apsey. "Traveling to a foreign land and seeing a new part of the world is an unmatched life experience. Last year our women's basketball team took advantage of an opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout. This would not happen if it weren't for the many generous contributions received from those associated with our program."
