Boise State Opens Season with Southern Oregon and Weber State
What’s Happening This Week
Boise State (0-0) opens the regular season Friday, Nov. 11, at home against the Southern Oregon Raiders (5-0) at 5:30 p.m. (Mountain) in Taco Bell Arena. The Ashland, Ore., school is a member of the NAIA Cascade Collegiate Conference. This will be the first regular season meeting all-time between the two programs.
Friday’s game with Southern Oregon is the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team, it is also the only home doubleheader of the season.
The Broncos will follow Friday’s opener with a Sunday, Nov. 13, afternoon encounter with the Weber State Wildcats (0-0) at 2:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena. The Wildcats are members of the Big Sky Conference where they were picked to place eighth out of nine in this year’s league race.
Boise State in Season Openers
The Broncos open the season at home for the fifth year in a row when they take the court on Friday against Southern Oregon. Boise State dropped its first season opener under Presnell last year in a 83-76 loss to Portland in Boise on Nov. 12. The Broncos are 24-17 all-time in season openers and 15-6 when opening in Boise (Bronco Gym and Taco Bell Arena).
A Quick Look at this Week’s Opponents
Southern Oregon: As a member of the NAIA the Raiders have already started their season entering the week undefeated at 5-0 and are winning by an average of 13.8 points per game. As a team Southern Oregon averages 73.4 points and 51.6 rebounds per game. Josi McDermott leads averaging 13 points and 6.8 rebounds, followed by Krysten Copeland at 8.8 ppg and Haley Newell at 8.4 ppg. The Raiders were picked to place sixth in the Cascade
Collegiate Conference.
Weber State: Weber State won its lone exhibition game of the year 60-42 over Adams State last Sunday. The Wildcats are former league rivals of the Broncos when they were both in the Big Sky Conference, where Weber State resides today. Sunday will be the season opener for the Wildcats who enter their first season under head coach Bethann Ord. WSU went 7-21 last year and 3-13 in the Big Sky to place eighth. Weber State defeated Boise State 79-70 last season in Ogden, Utah, to even the all-time series at 21 wins apiece.
Last Year Between Weber State and Boise State: The Wildcats out gunned the Broncos last year winning 79-70 in Ogden. Weber State was on fire from the 3-point arc hitting 11-of-22 shots finishing the night at 49.1 (27-55) from the floor overall compare to 41.9 percent (26-62) for Boise State. Kati Isham led the Broncos with 21 points powered by five-of-eight shooting from three point range. She was followed by 15 points fro Lauren Lenhardt and 11 by Kinzi Poteet. Weber State was led Megan Patterson with 27 points who went seven-of-12 from the arc and Caitlin Anderson with 26 points.

New Era Begins
A new era begins with the 2011-12 season as Boise State moves into the Mountain West effective July 1, 2011.
The Broncos left the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) following the 2010-11 campaign after ten years of membership.
Boise State joins Colorado State University, San Diego State University, Texas Christian University (TCU), University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), University of New Mexico, University of Wyoming and the U.S. Air Force Academy as members of the Mountain West.
What’s Back in 2011-12
Boise State returns four starters in Kati Isham (senior - guard) 31 career starts, Heather Pilcher (senior - wing) 37 career starts, Diana Lee (sophomore - point guard) 28 starts and Lauren Lenhardt (junior - center) 30 career starts. In addition, they return four other players that have started at least once in their careers: Julia Marshall (RS-sophomore - guard) 24 starts, Nicole Brady (RS-senior) one start, Kinzi Poteet (junior - forward) six starts and Cinnamon Lister (sophomore - guard) one start.
The Broncos return seven letterwinners and three redshirts from last year.
The top-two scorers and three of the top-four return led by Kati Isham (12.7 ppg) who ranked first last year and 10th in the WAC, Lauren Lenhardt was second (12.2 ppg) and 13th in the WAC, followed by Diana Lee who was fourth at 6.6 ppg.
Three of the top four rebounders are back led by Lauren Lenhardt who was second on the team last year at 5.6 rpg, Kinzi Poteet was third at 4.7 rpg, followed by Heather Pilcher at 3.2 rpg.
Diana Lee was the only Bronco to earn WAC postseason honors last year having been named to the WAC All-Freshman Team.
Boise State returns 74.2 percent of its points (1,544-of-2,081), 66.8 percent of its rebounds (796-of-1,192), 77.2 percent of assists (355-of-434), 67 percent of blocks (73-of-109) and 82.3 percent (150-of-181) steals.
What’s New This Year
New conference as Broncos join Mountain West.
Four new recruits, all true freshmen, in Lexie Der (will redshirt), Keiahnna Engel two-time Alaska State Player of the Year and 2011 Parade All-American, Riley Holsinger a two-time all-conference player and all-state honoree as a senior out of Spokane, Wash., and Amber Vandiver a two-time all-state honoree, once in Wyoming 2010 and once in Idaho at Boise’s Capital High School in 2011.
Ben Finkbeiner joined the coaching staff during the summer and will assist with recruiting and defense.
The Arguinchona Basketball Complex a new state of the art basketball locker room facility opened this summer. The two story 10,000-square foot facility features locker rooms, lounges, theater-style film room, study room and kitchen area for each basketball team (men and women).
