BOISE, Idaho – Boise State football head coach Bryan Harsin announced staffing changes Friday, including the hiring of Jeff Schmedding as the Broncos’ outside linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator.

Schmedding spent the last 15 seasons (2004-18) at Eastern Washington, helping to lead the Eagles to the Football Championship Subdivision National Championship in 2010. EWU also made the national title game this past season, ultimately falling to North Dakota State – one of 10 FCS Playoff appearances during Schmedding’s time with the program.

He most recently served as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2015-18, while also coaching safeties and rovers. He also spent seven seasons (2008-14) as the Eagles’ special teams coordinator, coaching linebackers (2008-09), safeties and nickels (2010-14) during that time.

He began his career at EWU as a graduate assistant (2004-06), spending time with linebackers, the secondary and special teams, before being promoted to a full-time role as safeties coach in 2007.

Schmedding earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and coaching from Eastern Washington in 2002.

Running backs coach Lee Marks will also serve as co-special teams coordinator, and defensive coordinator Andy Avalos will coach inside linebackers.

Rounding out the defensive staff, Spencer Danielson, who coached STUDs this past season, will take over as defensive line coach. Gabe Franklin will coach the Broncos’ safeties and nickels, and Jalil Brown, announced two weeks ago, will coach cornerbacks.

Additionally, on the offensive side, Eric Kiesau, who coached wide receivers the past two seasons, has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator alongside Zak Hill.
