COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West Board of Directors approved a resolution urging the NCAA to stay the current course by removing from the books any prohibition to conduct NCAA championships in states with legal sports books.
“The Mountain West’s resolution and the NCAA’s current path on this issue benefits not just the University of Nevada, Reno and UNLV but any other state with sports books which has aspirations for hosting an NCAA championship event,” said Nevada President Marc Johnson. “Integrity of competition and the well-being of our student-athletes, obviously, is something we prioritized very highly in composing this resolution.”
"Las Vegas is the sports and entertainment capital of the world, and we appreciate the endorsement by the Mountain West Conference for our community to host future NCAA Championships,” said UNLV Acting President Marta Meana. “Las Vegas provides a visitor experience unlike any other city, and the addition of NCAA Championships would be a natural fit.”
"This is a long time in the making and we thank the Mountain West for its leadership and support,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois, who sits on the NCAA Board of Governors Ad Hoc Committee on Sports Wagering. “We look forward to hosting future NCAA Championship events in our city that attracts 43 million visitors per year. In working alongside local and regional leaders, we will put together attractive and competitive bids so that our UNLV student-athletes will now have a chance to compete in NCAA postseason events here at home."
