BOISE, Idaho - Five Broncos scored in double figures as the Boise State women’s basketball team ran past Southern Oregon 93-55 in the season opener Friday night in Boise. Diana Lee led all scorers with a career-high 16 points followed by Kati Isham with 14 and Keiahnna Engel with 13. After a sluggish start the Broncos pulled away from the Raiders leading by 16 at the half and by as many as 40 in the second. The season opening victory was the sixth in seven years for Boise State under the direction of head coach Gordy Presnell.

The game was a typical first game for Boise State who struggled early against a Southern Oregon squad who was undefeated (5-0) and playing its sixth contest of the season. The Broncos trailed only once at 6-5 with under four minutes gone in the opening period. It remained close until about the midway point of the first half when Boise State appeared to find its rhythm and slowly pulled away.

Up six at 16-10 with 10:25 showing on the clock, Boise State made its move out scoring the Raiders 19-9 in the final 10 minutes to take a 16-point, 35-19, lead into halftime. Diana Lee had 10 points at the break while Kinzi Poteet recorded 13 of her team-high 16 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

The Broncos opened the second half forcing three straight turnovers and converting them into six quick points and a 22 point lead. On the night Boise State out scored Southern Oregon 44 to four in points off turnovers as they forced the Raiders into committing 34 in the game, the Broncos had 19.

With 14:36 to play the Broncos were up 18 points at 47-29, that was as close as Southern Oregon would get. Boise State rolled off a 10-0 run to put an end to any question as to the eventual outcome, if there was any doubt before. From that point on the Broncos maintained a 25 point lead or larger, taking a game-high 40 point advantage at 91-51 with 41 seconds left.

Boise State opened the contest struggling to get its shots to fall from anywhere on the court hitting 28.3 percent from the floor (13-46), 22.2 percent (2-9) from the arc and 53.8 percent (7-13) from the free-throw line. The second half saw them pick it up in all three categories as they hit 58.5 percent from the floor in the period. The Broncos finished the night at 42.5 percent (37-87) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-18) from the 3-point line and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the charity stripe.

Boise State’s defense held the Raiders to 29.3 percent (17-58) from the floor and 19 percent (4-21) from 3-point range in the game. The only place they shot well from was the foul line converting 85 percent (17-20). The Broncos dominated the paint by a 52 to 14 margin which was aided by a 24 to four advantage in fast break points.

Lee shot 60 percent from the floor hitting six-of-10 shots, two from beyond the arc. Nicole Brady recorded her first career double-double as a Bronco with 10 points and 11 rebounds, the boards were a career high. Isham was second in scoring adding 14 points to three rebounds and two steals on the night. Eleven of Engel’s points came in the second half, as did all of Mandy Munns’ 11 points. Kinzi Poteet finished the night with nine points to tie her career high, while shattering her previous best for rebounds with 16.

Chiquita Thomas led Southern Oregon with 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Krysten Copeland followed with 10 points and five rebounds, while Josi McDermott added eight points and team-high seven boards.
