News From Boise State University

DEAR FRIENDS,
All of us here at Boise State University have been excited to welcome the Class of 2020 this month. We have more students living on campus than ever before, and the excitement they are bringing is palpable.
In my annual address to faculty and staff, I took the chance to celebrate a major milestone we achieved in the past year — our official designation as a doctoral research university in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. A goal of ours for more than a decade, achievement took a significant amount of work by faculty and staff, and undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, who have been essential in building the research portfolio needed to join this top tier of universities in the nation.
Of course, we can’t stop here. Boise State has a long history of transformative change. What sets us apart is the drive of our leaders, faculty and friends to immediately take aim at the next challenge, even as the last one is just sinking in. For us, this means continuing to find innovative ways to be distinct among our peers, vital for our students and community, and influential around the world.
We must constantly ask ourselves - what does the job of tomorrow look like? How should we adapt to make our students not only the finest citizens in the world, but employable? How can we become more flexible when it comes to the ways we prepare our students?
Just this month, we learned of the latest distinction bestowed upon Boise State. A London-based strategic consulting firm, Firetail, named us one of the 20 universities in the world best positioned to challenge the higher education establishment on a global scale. Let me state that again — one of 20 universities in the world.
“They can, and will, shake up the establishment,” stated the report, called the “Class of 2030.”
The report’s authors note that even these universities that have quickly moved up in the international ranks will have to be strategic and innovative for the next two decades to pull this off. I agree it will be yet another challenge, but Boise State is up for it.
Our parents, partners, friends and alumni play a crucial role in this unique Boise State story, and only with your support and collaboration can we continue to be on the leading edge of higher education - not just in the West or the United States - but in the world. With your continued help, we will have the creative and innovative culture to help us graduate with honors in the class of 2030.
As always, thanks for all that you do for Boise State.
