Tim Duryea (pronounced Dur-yea) has been hired as an assistant coach for the Boise State men's basketball team, head coach Leon Rice announced Monday

BOISE, Idaho – Tim Duryea (pronounced Dur-yea) has been hired as an assistant coach for the Boise State men's basketball team, head coach Leon Rice announced Monday.

"Tim brings a wealth of experience and comes from a program that I've always respected," Rice said. "He's been to the NCAA Tournament several times and has diverse recruiting connections with his junior college background and Texas roots. He and his family will be a great addition to the Boise community and our basketball staff."

Duryea was most recently the head coach at Utah State for three seasons from 2015-18. He had been in Logan for a total of 17 seasons, as he was also an assistant coach for the Aggies from 2001-08 and the associate head coach from 2008-15.

"I've always had a lot of respect for Coach Rice and his program," Duryea said. "Ever since his first year when he made it to the championship game of the WAC Tournament in 2011, Boise State has handled the change in leagues well and steadily grown as a program. In recent years, no one has been at the top of the Mountain West more consistently than Coach Rice and Boise State."

Duryea coached one of the best backcourts in the Mountain West the past couple seasons in Koby McEwen and Sam Merrill – both of which were All-Mountain West Third Team selections in 2017-18. McEwen was also the 2016-17 Mountain West Freshman of the Year while Merrill shot 46.0 percent from behind the arc in two seasons with the Aggies.

Utah State boasted the top offense in the league in 2016-17, as the Aggies shot a Mountain West-best 46.1 percent (790-of-1,713) from the floor and were No. 2 in 3-point shooting at 37.9 percent (234-of-618).

Prior to becoming head coach, Duryea helped Utah State to six NCAA Tournament appearances (2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011) and five regular season conference championships in the Big West (2003) and Western Athletic Conferences (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011).

As associate head coach from 2001-08, Duryea headed a Utah State offense that consistently shot a high percentage from the field and was renowned for taking care of the basketball, as shown by an assist-to-turnover ratio that was ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA multiple seasons.

Utah State saw three players earn All-America status with Duryea on staff, as Jaycee Carroll (2007, '08), Gary Wilkinson (2009) and Tai Wesley (2011).

Prior to his time at Utah State, Duryea was the head coach at Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College from 1999-2001. He compiled a 40-25 record in two seasons and led his team to back-to-back trips to the Region Six Championships.

Duryea graduated from North Texas in 1988 and immediately began his coaching career that same year at Colorado State. He then returned to North Texas in 1993 and was an assistant there for four seasons before heading to Hutchinson CC as an assistant in 1997.

He played his college basketball at Texas Pan-American and later transferred North Texas we he was co-captain in 1988 and played on one of only three teams in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
