BOISE, Idaho— Former Boise State men’s basketball student-athlete Mikey Thompson signed his first professional contract Wednesday, and will join MBK Banik Handlova of the top league in Slovakia, the Slovak Extraliga. Thompson will join the team in August.
MBK Banik Handlova finished fourth in the league during the 2014-15 campaign and advanced to the semifinals of the postseason tournament. The franchise did not compete last season as its home venue underwent major renovations. Management announced in late May that the team would be back in business for the 2016-17 campaign.
The team is located in the city of Handlova, situated in central Slovakia. The town has a population of roughly 18,000 and is surrounded by two mountain ranges.
Thompson earned All-Mountain West Third Team honors last season in separate votes by the league’s coaches and media. He averaged 11.9 points and 3.8 assists per game as a senior in 2015-16. Thompson appeared in 126 games as a Bronco, helping the program to two NCAA Tournaments in 2013 and 2015. He became the 26th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.
Shortly after his collegiate career concluded in March, Thompson earned a spot on the NetScouts Basketball USA All-Stars team which played eight games in China as part of the Four Nations Tournament. The USA team won the tournament title, going 6-2 against teams from Canada, China and Lithuania. Thompson averaged 5.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists during the tournament.
