Boise State Returns to the NCAA Tournament

Boise State (34-14) vs Stanford (32-18) — May 17, 10 a.m. MT, Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium | Live Stats | ESPNU | Tickets

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise State softball team will make their return to the NCAA Tournament at the Gainesville Region, May 17-19.

SERIES HISTORY

This will be the third all-time meeting between Boise State and Stanford. Both programs have managed to pull a game from one another in 9-1 contests. The Broncos won the inaugural meeting (Feb. 27, 2016) in six innings thanks to a game-ending grand slam from Kayla Clausen. Stanford evened the series in 2018 with a five-inning win at the Kajikawa Classic, Feb. 11, 2018.

The Broncos trail the all-time series against Florida, with the lone meeting being a 3-0 loss on Feb. 25, 2012.

BACK IN THE DANCE
Boise State is making its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and third-straight postseason appearance in program history. Boise State went 0-2 at the Seattle Region in 2018, falling to overall No. 5 seed Washington, and to No. 25 Minnesota to end their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos were out-scored 19-2 on that weekend.

FIRST TIME IN FLORIDA

The Broncos will be making the 2,398-mile trek to Gainesville for this weekend’s regional. This will be the first time the program has stepped foot on Florida soil, and only the second time Boise State has played games east of the Mississippi River. In 2017, Boise State went 6-0 in their East Coast debut, defeating Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, Maryland East Shore and South Carolina State at the Charleston Southern Tournament (Feb. 23-25).

LIVRERI ERA STARTS OFF WITH SUCCESS
With a record of 34-14, Boise State has gotten off to a strong start under first-year head coach Maggie Livreri — the third head coach in program history. The Broncos rank 34th nationally with a .708 winning percentage. She is tied for first with DePaul’s Tracie Adix-Zins among first-year head coaches with the highest winning percentage. Livreri is one of four first-year head coaches to make the NCAA Tournament this year (DePaul, Sam Houston State, Saint Francis), and one of eight head coaches to do so in the first year leading their current programs (UMBC, Louisville, Texas, Missouri, Toledo).

FIRST RANKED WINS
In the series against No. 25 Colorado State (May 3-5), the Broncos were able to get the first win over a ranked opponent since Boise State swept then No. 25 Fresno State to close out the 2011 season (April 29-30). By getting two victories over the Rams, Boise State improved their all-time record against ranked opponents to 5-47-1.

BUT WHO HAVE THEY PLAYED?

A year after making their first NCAA Tournament appearance, the Broncos will return to the Bid Dance in 2019, this time as an at-large team. Boise State is currently ranked 40th in the selection week RPI — the highest the program has ever been ranked in the metric at this point of the season. Boise State amassed a 13 wins over top 100 programs, including a win over 18th-ranked Ole Miss — the first win over a SEC team in program history.

FILLMORE A TALISMAN
The team’s leader in home runs this season with 15, Bradie Fillmore has provided a pathway to success for the Broncos this year. Boise State is 13-1 on the season when Fillmore hits a home run, with the lone loss being to San Diego State on March 22.

KEEP THE K’S OFF THE BOARD
Boise State already owns one of the nation’s most potent offenses, ranking in the top 10 in batting average (.327), scoring (6.69), slugging percentage (.708) and triples per game (0.35). That offense is led by a trio of batters who rank in the top 150 nationally in toughest to strikeout. Ashlyn Adams led the trio in ninth, while Rebekah Cervantes (43rd) and Kora Wade (140th) round out the top of the order that has found a way keep opposing pitchers from adding a K to the board.
