Broncos Down Aztecs for First MW Title

BOISE, Idaho - For the first time since joining the Mountain West in 2013, Boise State women’s soccer is the MW Tournament champion. The top-seeded Broncos defeated the No. 2 seed San Diego State, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Boas Soccer Complex. It is the 10th time the top seed has won the Mountain West tournament.

“Some of these kids I’ve known since they were 14 or 15 years old, playing for youth teams and I was a youth coach too,” said head coach Jim Thomas. “Anybody who knows our program, knows we haven’t always been good. We have had to build something here. There are people who aren’t here today that helped to build this.”

This is the first conference tournament title-game appearance for the Broncos since 2013, and the first title since they won the WAC Championship in 2009.

Boise State set an all-time attendance record at Boas, packing 1,302 fans into the facility, eclipsing the previous record of 1,252. It was also a record for most in a MW Championship final since 2012

Raimee Sherle led of the Boise State scoring with a goal in the 17th minute. A throw in by the Broncos led to a blocked shot outside the box by senior Emily Curry, the rebound found Sherle in the center of the box who nailed it past the Aztec keeper for the game winner.

Sherle scored four goals in two tournament games for the Broncos and earned Mountain West All-Tournament team and tournament MVP. She now sits at 16 goals, eight assists and 40 points on the season.

Boise State’s second goal came just after halftime in the 50th minute out of a corner kick. Sherle sent the kick into the box. After an initial clearance, junior Aubree Chatterton sent the ball back in where it was headed into the goal by senior McKenna Kynett.

For Chatterton, that was her first assist of the year, and she now has seven goals and one assist for 15 points. Kynett scored her fifth goal of the year, to go along with three assists for 13 points.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Smith recorded her 13th shutout of the year, this one requiring just two saves. She is now tied for most shutouts in the nation. Smith had one save late in the match to preserve the shutout when she made a diving save while charging at an Aztec forward.

Following the match, Boise State had four players named to the Mountain West Tournament Team. Senior forwards Sherle and Kristina Serres, sophomore defender Macie Nelson and freshman defender Morgan Stone.

With the conference title, the Broncos earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Boise State awaits word on the location and time for its first-round matchup. The NCAA Selection Show, will take place, Monday at 2:30 p.m. MT.
